Controlling Fleas and Ticks

Fleas and ticks are not just a nuisance. They can pose a serious health risk to your pets and your human family as well. So controlling them isn’t something you, as a pet owner, should take lightly.  The trouble is, there are dozens of products on the market that claim to kill and/or prevent these parasites, and a lot of them just don’t work.

We have found that when it comes to flea and tick control, the adage is true. “You get what you pay for.” Flea collars, in general, are probably our least favorite solution for a number of reasons, not least of which is the fact that they don’t work consistently over time. They are stinky, messy, and can pose a risk to children and other animals that may ingest the medication they include. So, although they are a less expensive option, we don’t recommend them.

Flea baths and powders are helpful in clearing away fleas that are already on an animal, but the lasting preventive qualities of these products is minimal.  We have found that, once an animal has been thoroughly cleaned and the live parasites have been removed, it’s best to use a high quality preventative medicine from your vet.

Talk to your vet about the flea and tick prevention options that will be most appropriate for your pet’s breed, age, size and physical environment.  Then, purchase the solution your vet recommends.   You can buy the products from your vet, or you may be able to get them elsewhere and save some money.  But don’t waste your money on the cheap knock-off brands, as these may be less effective and may actually contain ingredients that can harm your pets.  Once you have the problem under control, continue to check for fleas and ticks on your pet regularly.  Remember he’s counting on you to keep him healthy.
