Choosing the right toothbrush and toothpaste for your pet

It’s important to brush your pets’ teeth on a regular basis for their heath. You should use a little rubber finger brush as an introduction to teeth brushing. Let him lick a little of the toothpaste off of the brush so that he knows what it is and that it tastes good. Start with brushing the back teeth and working your way forward. After you have brushed his teeth with the finger brush a few times and he is comfortable with you using the finger brush you can graduate to the long toothbrush.

You must never use human toothpaste in your dog’s mouth. You have to use a pet toothpaste. First off, your pet is not going to like your minty fresh flavored toothpaste. More importantly though, dogs and cats can’t digest human toothpaste, and they can’t rinse and spit either. So buy him his own toothpaste and use it regularly.

When buying a pet toothpaste you have to be careful. Most pet toothpastes have sugar in them which is clearly counterproductive. Manufacturers will also hide the sugar in the ingredients list under many different names. This is why we recommend buying the Nylabone Toothpaste. The big pet shop chains carry it, and it doesn’t contain sugar. They have a few different flavors to choose from that your pet will like.
