Choosing a Dog Leash

Every dog owner needs to have a leash. Choosing the right leash can save you a lot of pain and anguish, especially as your dog is learning to walk with you on his leash. The best leash is one that is 4-6 feet long, depending on the size of the dog. Puppies and small dogs should have a 6ft leash, and medium to large sized dogs should use a 4ft leash.

We strongly recommend using a leather leash. Nylon leashes may be cute, but when your dog pulls, the leash tears up your hands, whereas leather is much easier on your skin. Until your dog is well-controlled on the leash, you'll appreciate the safety and comfort of a good leather leash.

Extendable leashes can be a lot of fun for dogs that are well trained, but they are often hazardous. You never want to start your dog’s leash training with an extendable leash. When encountering other dogs and people, they can easily get tangled. That extendable cord can seriously hurt a tangled up dog or human. You also don’t have as much control over your dog as you would with a leather leash.
